Top Places to Visit in Hyattsville, MD! - Washington DC Suburbs

[EDITOR’S NOTE: This article was originally just a tour video of places to visit in Hyattsville, but with the global pandemic of Covid-19 having a huge effect on the economy, I wanted to use this to showcase some small businesses you can support during this time. Those businesses will be marked with an asterisk next to their name.]

I love my hometown and miss it often, which makes opportunities like this really special. Hyattsville is unique for many reasons. From how easy it is to get to New York City, Baltimore or DC, to the community, to the food.

Speaking about community, a special shoutout to the homie AyeFelon for letting me use some tracks off of his album Meta for this video. I’ll leave a link for you to check out more of his music below.

So I’m going to take you around town and show you the Top 5 places you need to visit in Hyattsville if you are visiting the city. Just a quick note, for clarity, I’m going by what Google Maps is calling the Hyattsville city limits, so locations that are in neighboring cities like Riverdale or College Park won’t be included.

Vigilante Coffee*

We’re starting our day bright and early, and what better way to do that than with a cup of coffee? Vigilante Coffee is a Hyattsville institution located in the city's Art District and a great place to get breakfast. Beautifully lit by natural light, it makes for a wonderful spot to meet some friends and unwind.

Shoppes at Art District

Of course after breakfast comes lunch, so why not take a short walk through the Art District and head over to the Shoppes at Art District. There, you’ll find an assortment of things to eat from Elevation Burger to Busboys & Poets. This area features a mix of things to check out, so be sure to explore it and stop by the “Handmade in Hyattsville” mural just across the street.

University Town Center

After lunch, it’s time to go catch a movie at University Town Center, located right across the street from “The Mall at Prince Georges” (It’s still PG Plaza if you know, you know). Here, you can catch the latest movies or grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

The Mall at Prince George’s

Of course, you can’t talk about Hyattsville without talking about the mall. As a native Hyattsvillian, this tends to be a spot to pick up everything from food in the food court to the latest drops from Nike and Jordan from Foot Locker and DTLR, to your essentials at Target and more. With a subway stop right across the street, the mall is easily accessible to both people in the city and those living nearby in DC, Montgomery County, and Northern Virginia.

Franklins*

For dinner, let’s head back down to the Arts District and stop by another local Hyattsville hot spot, Franklins. Known for their rotating menu of food, Franklin’s is part general store, brewery and restaurant all in one and one of the best spots to eat in the city.

Maryland Meadworks*

To finish off our day in Hyattsville, our last spot on the trip is a spot dear to my heart, Maryland Meadworks. Located on Route 1 as it heads into Northeast DC, this local meadery owned by my friend Ken Carter offers events throughout the weekend as well as a selection of eight different meads on tap. Bee sure to stop by, grab a drink and enjoy the night.
