Photographing Rachel Maddow - Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master Lens

A few weekends ago, I had the absolute pleasure to shoot tv show host and commentator Rachel Maddow on her book tour here in Tulsa. Having an opportunity like this meant that I would get access to photograph her backstage in the green room as well as on the main stage. Being indoors, in somewhat lit conditions, meant that I needed a lens that could zoom to cover a full range of focal lengths of group shots and isolated portraits - a prime lens would not cut it here (unless I had a second body to use with a different lens).

My choice for this event was a recent lens purchase, the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master lens. Not only does the 24-70mm focal length cover a wide range of potential shots, such as crowd shots or group photos, but having an f/2.8 aperture means that it’s fast enough to work in low-light where I can turn up the shutter without having to raise my ISO levels as high.

Everything about this lens screams well built and professional. Heavy weight, a lock switch, and programable button on the side that you can use for EyeAF. An 82mm filter thread is a good sign of all the glass that’s inside the lens.

Here are some example shots of what I was able to capture with that lens, shot with the Sony a7 III.

This lens is quickly becoming my go to choice for most work. Unless you have the time to switch primes, this is a top pick for me.
