WPPI, otherwise known as the Wedding & Portrait Photography International convention, is an event where a lot of brands and photographers come together and gives a chance for both sides to engage with themselves and each other. It’s also a great opportunity for brands to announce new products, and that’s what Sony did this year with the new FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens.

From first impressions and multiple reviews on YouTube, a few influential figures in the photography world have had this lens for a few weeks and the results have been generally favorable. It shares similar build design and quality with the FE 24mm f/1.4 G Master lens, with a de-clickable aperture ring, XD linear lens motors for quick autofocus and customizable button on the side. It has a 67mm filter thread, and a close focusing distance of 0.63 ft.

The lens is a little bit smaller than the previously mentioned 24mm, which was already a relatively small and lightweight lens. Through Sony’s own marketing and various reviews, this lens is positioned as a good pairing with the Sony a7 III to be a potent lightweight combination that offers a wide field of view, bright f/1.8 aperture and plenty of control options while coming under the 24mm’s price by $500.

All the various reviews and first looks have left me impressed with what Sony has been able to accomplish with this lens. As someone who finds a lens like this extremely useful for establishing video shots on location, and just general day to day use for street photography, this lens looks like it is a winner.
